Český Krumlov

Český Krumlov
the city of revolving auditorium

Český Krumlov, a picturesque town in the south of Bohemia, stands out thanks to its architecture and stunning natural surroundings. It is one of the most visited places in Czech Republic and its beauty is recognized also internationally. In 2008 the survey of the prestigious National Geographic magazine it ranked 16th among the most beautiful places in the world. The center of Český Krumlov has been included in UNESCO World Heritage list since 1992.

Changes throughout history

The first written records of Český Krumlov dates to the 13th century. However, the Krumlov territory was inhabited by the Slavic tribes since the sixth century. In the 15th century gold and silver mining started quick growth of the city. For seven centuries Český Krumlov served as the seat of the Rosenberg family. The beautiful castle was rebuilt to its present form by the most famous of the Rosenberg, William. Two centuries later the property was part of the Schwarzenberg estate. It was so until 1947, when it was expropriated by the upcoming communist regime.

Historical and natural sites

The main tourist attraction of the city is the Český Krumlov castle. It is not only its architectural beauty that stunned tourists, but also its size - the castle complex is the second largest in Czech Republic, just after the Prague Castle. The castle offers its tourists many interesting parts to explore, such as the upper castle with the main part of the castle complex and the lower castle with its dominant tower. There is also a beautiful bridge, which is composed out of several floors and connects the castle with the surrounding gardens. The gardens themselves are one of the most breath-taking parts of the whole castle complex. They were founded at the end of the 16th century and have an area of almost 11 hectares. While exploring them, tourists can refresh themselves near the beautiful Cascade Fountain, in the shade of the Bellaire Summerhouse, or marvel at Český Krumlov’s famous revolving auditorium.
