How History Was Written
From 1352 until 1945, Liberec bore the German name Reichenberg. The first written record of what was then a village also dates from 1352.
The town truly grew under the Redern family, whose rule brought Liberec its chateau and its town status. The most important era, however, was the 18th century.
That's when the textile industry took off here, and Liberec became the largest manufacturing town in the Kingdom of Bohemia. The town hall and the theater were built at the end of the 19th century.
One of the most significant, and saddest, moments of the 20th century for Liberec was the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops, which claimed 9 lives. Václav Havel and Jan Tříska were in the city at the time and broadcast from Liberec's radio station.
A Textile Tradition That Lives On
Textile manufacturing in Liberec has been in decline since the 1990s, but the craft hasn't disappeared from the city. The Technical University has a textile faculty here, the only one in the country where you can study the field at every level, from a bachelor's degree to a doctorate.
Historic and Natural Landmarks Nearby
Liberec's true landmark is the town hall on Dr. E. Beneš Square. It houses the city administration and is also the symbol of the whole city. The building has three towers; the middle one is the tallest, reaching 65 meters.
From 1952 to 1989, a red star topped the tower; since 2005, the original statue of the knight Roland has stood there again. Another major landmark is Liberec Chateau, whose present form dates from the 18th century. When you visit, you can see its permanent glass exhibition, one of the largest in the world.
A Hotel at the Top of Ještěd
Ještěd mountain rises above the city. Its summit sits at 1,012 meters above sea level, and the TV transmitter on top has stood there since 1973.
The building also serves as a hotel and restaurant. That means you can pair a company dinner or overnight stay with a unique view your participants will remember far longer than the program itself.

Right across from Babylon is iQLANDIA, home to interactive exhibits. You'll see a humanoid robot there or try out astronaut training.
When in Liberec, don't miss the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic or the beautiful botanical gardens, which are also among the oldest in the country. The Liberec Technical Museum opened in 2004.
